In the City of San Antonio you pull a city solar permit and get CPS Energy approval — and it’s smart to submit to both at once.

Permits you’ll need
A Solar/Photovoltaic trade permit (a subtype of the electrical permit), which must be pulled by a state-licensed master electrician registered with the city — so unlike some Texas cities, you can’t self-permit the electrical work as a homeowner here.
How to submit
Apply through the BuildSA Customer Portal (using the Plan Room for documents and resubmittals). Submit to Development Services and CPS Energy at the same time to keep both tracks moving.
Fees & timeline
Residential solar permits typically run about $275–$525, and every install needs CPS Energy approval before it can operate.
Worth knowing
Roof-mounted arrays must meet International Fire Code access-pathway rules (IFC 1205) — keep the required clearances around the array.
Outside city limits
In unincorporated Bexar County or a neighboring city, you permit through that jurisdiction instead.
Permit in hand? The next step is requesting grid interconnection from CPS Energy — see its rates, buyback, fees, and application links. Or go back to the full Texas solar guide.
