Privacy Policy

Effective date: June 13, 2026

dot.energy ("we," "us," or "our") operates the dot.energy solar simulation platform. This policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and your rights — in plain English.

What we collect

  • Account information: Your email address and a hashed (encrypted) password. We never store your password in plain text.
  • Project and simulation data: System configurations, equipment selections, and simulation results you create on the platform.
  • Electricity usage data: If you upload Smart Meter Texas (SMT) data or enter monthly usage figures, that data is stored to power your simulations.
  • Usage logs: Standard server logs (IP address, browser type, pages visited) for security and debugging. These are not linked to your account for marketing purposes.

What we do not collect

  • We do not collect your name, phone number, or physical address unless you voluntarily submit a quote request.
  • We do not use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies. Our product analytics are cookieless (see Analytics and your choices below).
  • We do not sell, rent, or share your personal data with third parties for marketing purposes.

How we use your data

  • To run solar simulations and display results specific to your system configuration.
  • To save your projects so you can return and continue working on them.
  • To generate shareable reports at your request.
  • To maintain the security and reliability of the platform.

We do not send marketing emails. We will only contact you if you explicitly request a quote or support.

Analytics and your choices

We use a privacy-friendly product analytics tool (PostHog) to understand how the platform is used — which pages and features people use, and where they run into trouble — so we can improve it. This is cookieless: we use your browser's local storage rather than tracking cookies, and we honor your browser's "Do Not Track" setting.

We collect nothing until you opt in. On your first visit we ask for your choice, and analytics stay off unless you accept. You can change your mind here at any time.

Analytics may include the pages you visit, clicks and interactions, and anonymized session recordings used to diagnose usability problems. All form inputs are masked — we never record what you type (such as your email, password, or usage figures). For logged-in users, activity is associated with your account so we can improve your experience; we do not sell or share this data, and it is never used for third-party advertising.

Product analytics

Analytics are off. We are not collecting analytics in this browser.

Your choice is remembered per browser. You can change it here at any time.

Data storage and security

Your data is stored on servers located in the United States. We use industry-standard encryption in transit (HTTPS/TLS) and at rest. Passwords are hashed using bcrypt and are never recoverable, even by us.

Your rights — deletion and data access

You can delete your account and all associated data at any time from your account settings. Deletion is permanent and immediate — all projects, simulations, uploaded usage data, and account information are removed from our systems with no recovery period.

To request a copy of your data or raise a privacy concern, contact us at privacy@dot.energy.

Third-party services

We use Amazon Web Services (AWS) to host the platform and PostHog for cookieless product analytics and error monitoring (see Analytics and your choices above). These providers process data on our behalf in the United States and are bound by confidentiality obligations. We do not use advertising networks or social media tracking pixels.

Children's privacy

dot.energy is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe we have inadvertently collected such information, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the platform evolves. We will post the updated policy here with a new effective date. Continued use of the platform after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
